SIM card with fixed IP address

A SIM card with a fixed IP address makes our AirInternet service unbeatable and the perfect internet solution for businesses.
But what exactly is an IP address and why don’t SIM cards always have a fixed IP address?
We will explain this below.

What is a SIM card?

SIM is an abbreviation for Subscriber Identity Module. It is a card with a small chip that serves as an information carrier.

In the beginning, a SIM card was only used in mobile phones.
Mobile phones have been around since 1973. Mobile internet has been possible since 2002. However: the SIM card was only used from the GSM standard onwards. Before this GSM standard existed, there were many different standards in Europe!
In the Netherlands, for example, the ATF1, 2 and 3.
These phones did not have a SIM card at all.
You had to use special software to program data into them.
(Funnily enough, there is now the opposite trend, where the SIM card is disappearing and esims are being introduced, which are nothing more than a special memory. The difference with pre-GSM devices is that programming is now done over-the-air.
Apart from that…)

By the way, Wikipedia contains a lot of information about developments and history in mobile telephony.

What is an IP address?

An IP address is your unique address on the Internet. IP is the abbreviation for Internet Protocol.
This address is always sent along when you request data over the Internet so that the requested data can be sent back to your unique IP address.
The IP address can be seen as the name of the device, making everything that happens online traceable.
However, given the huge increase in different devices, it is impossible to assign each device its own fixed IP address.
How is an IP address structured?

An IP address consists of two parts. It begins with the identification number of a specific network on the Internet. Followed by the indication of the device used in the network.
The most common IP addresses consist of 32 bits, i.e. 4 bytes. This is the IPv4 system, the internet protocol version 4.
Such an address is divided into four groups of 8 bits. These are represented as decimal numbers separated by dots. The four numbers are each smaller than 256, for example 193.78.241.12.

Because of the impending scarcity of Internet addresses, Internet addresses are now also assigned that consist of 128 bits, i.e. 16 bytes. The internet protocol version 6 (IPv6) system allows an almost infinite number of addresses.
There are also technical advantages.
On Wikipedia you will find a lot more information.

What is my IP address?

Are you curious about the local IP address of your smartphone, laptop or desktop computer connected to your home network?
The easiest way to find your internal IP address in Windows is:
Open the Start menu, type “cmd” and open the command line.
Type “ipconfig /all” and press Enter.
You can look up the external IP address of your connection on various websites, for example whatismyip .

What types of IP addresses can be found on sim cards?

Sim cards for data use always have an IP address, which can be either a dynamic or a fixed IP address.

Dynamic
Dynamic IP addresses come from your provider’s large pool and are characterised by the fact that they are constantly changing, i.e. they are not accessible via the Internet. Many devices use a dynamic IP address.
The address can change every time a user logs on or every few days, weeks or months.
Dynamic IP addresses are assigned automatically via DHCP
(Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol).
This makes dynamic IP addresses much less scarce and therefore a cost-effective solution.
However, the major disadvantage of dynamic IP addresses is that they change regularly, so that secure access to the devices from outside is not possible.
Because the dynamic IP address changes regularly, your computer is not always recognised from the outside.

Fixed
A fixed IP address never changes and is permanently assigned to a specific printer, server or other device. A fixed IP address makes a computer connected to the Internet discoverable.
A fixed IP address makes it easier to reach servers from outside your own network.
Especially if you have a somewhat larger company network with its own servers, a fixed IP address is worth considering.
Working from home is simply not possible if there is no fixed IP address for the internet connection of the company network.
There are 2 types of fixed IP addresses:
public and private.
